I think I've figured out why there are so many mixed reviews out there, now that the NDA has lifted. It seems as if the gaming community is split right down the middle, half of the people saying they love the game and it's perfect, and the other half saying it's as boring as they come. Well here's my theory on that:
This game has a huge audience, simply because it is both a star wars game and an SOE MMORPG. So, on one side you have all the players that think Everquest was the greatest game ever made. They are saying the game rocks because there's so much more to do than EQ. The crafting system is more advanced, there are entertainer professions that haven't existed in any other MMORPG's that I know of (unless you RP'd them yourself), and combat is a little more complicated than pressing A and walking off for a while. They see the factories and droids and notice that (some) of the repetitive crafting grind is eliminated. Not to mention the graphics blow EQ out of the water.
On the other side of the fence, you have the FPS players that all think Counterstrike was God's gift to gaming. You know the crowd I'm talking about.... they saw the star wars label and thought it had to be a high action game. For them, the only thing that matters is the combat.... everything else is for the Role-players. When they get in their first combat and realize they can't bunny hop all over the place, that they don't have to worry about having perfect aim (as a player, not a character), and there is little or no "twitch" involved, they yawn and call it boring. Some are brave enough to try crafting, but when they can't make uber weapons in a few hours, or even days, they call it too much of a grind. Finally, they turn on their FPS meter and are shocked that they're only getting 24 fps in their brand new 3 GHz computer with a $400 video card and 2 GB of ram. Thus, to these people, the game sucks.
Finally, there is the group of people who see the bugs in it today and assume they will always be there. I took these people with a grain of salt and moved on.
But, I'm not in beta, I'm only summarizing the point of views that I've read between the lines of the mad rush of reviews posted last night. If I'm right, the game will be perfect for me: I loved EQ (almost too much), but anywhere that a little bit of the grind can be removed is a good thing. And I think most FPS games out there are too reliant on the reflexes of the player, reflexes I don't generally have (though I got pretty quick at sending my earth pet into the fray to keep adds off my group).
Just my 2 credits,
David
