Greetings all,
In reply to tael's request I am posting to tell you all a little about the carbineer profession and the skills that you will receive should you undertake this military profession.
I'll start with the basics, since I'm not aware of your knowledge of firearms. Even though this is SWG, the rules for firearm usage are pretty much the same as in RL.
First off, the differences between all three ranged weapons are pretty simple.
Pistol - a close range weapon, accurate up to about 25 meters.
Carbine - a mid-ranged weapon, accurate between 10 - 50 meters.
Rifle - a long ranged weapon, accurate between 15 - 64 meters.
Sorry about that, but like I said, I'm not sure how much you all know on the subject. One thing I recommend is that once you are in the game, if you are considering a ranged weapon profession, you get Master Marksman first. This will give you certifications in a wide variety of pistols, carbines and rifles. Though I am in the process of completing my Carbineer skill, it's still nice to be able to use a pistol or rifle with some accuracy and speed.
Now to the Carbineer. Put simply, the Carbineer is a master at using this type of weapon. Upon reaching a new skill level, he/she is given new abilities such as special attacks, increases in accuracy and rate of fire, and the ability to attack accurately while on the move. I particularly like that last one, because as I'm sure you all know, it's hard to hit a moving target.
Some of the special abilities or attacks are the ability to stun, knock down, or cripple a target. All of these are very useful whether you're killing Imps or hunting on Endor.
Well I've rambled on enough about this. Feel free to ask me any questions you might have about the ranged weapon professions, or SWG in general. I'll just have to be careful not to break the NDA.
